Little did he know it would soon become the darling of the chattering classes, and a case study in heroic failure. More in the tradition of Tony Young ("How to Lose Friends & Alienate People") than Felix Dennis ("How to be Rich"), in this highly entertaining memoir readers discover just why only one in ten new businesses make it, and what happens to the other nine.

This book is the story of how four busy executives, from different backgrounds and different perspectives, were surprised to find themselves converging on the idea of narrative as an extraordinarily valuable lens for understanding and managing organizations in the twenty-first century. The idea that narrative and storytelling could be so powerful a tool in the world of organizations was initially counter-intuitive. But in their own words, John Seely Brown, Steve Denning, Katalina Groh, and Larry Prusak describe how they came to see the power of narrative and storytelling in their own experience working on knowledge management, change management, and innovation strategies in organizations such as Xerox, the World Bank, and IBM.
Tags: [edit]

The book introduces the concept of narrative intelligence—an ability to understand and act and react agilely in the quicksilver world of interacting narratives. It shows why this is key to the central task of leadership, what its dimensions are, and how you can measure it. The book's lucid explanations, vivid examples and practical tips are essential reading for CEOs, managers, change agents, marketers, salespersons, brand managers, politicians, teachers, parents—anyone who is setting out to the change the world.

Wiley | 2008-09-29 | 226 pages | PDF | 1,09 MB
This book focuses on the 11 men, lawyers and bankers, who are responsible for the creation of Wall Street's merger industry. It specifically concentrates on the events and personalities who dominated Wall Street during the takeover battles of the 1970s and 1980s. Lawyers Joe Flom and Marty Lipton, the godfathers of modern M&A, educated bankers on takeover laws and regulations as well as tactics. Flom and Lipton were also superlative businessmen who built their own firms to become Wall Street powerhouses. The two men drew into their orbit a circle of bankers. Felix Rohatyn, Ira Harris, Steve Friedman, Geoff Boisi, Eric Gleacher and Bruce Wasserstein were close to Lipton. Robert Greenhill and Joe Perella were close to Flom.

Real Estate Investment in Asia Pacific: Migrating Capital
KPMG | 2008 | English | PDF | 70 pages | 4 MB
Property investment has emerged as an asset class, but it remains difficult to access and is often beset by complex structures and regulation. The factors governing investment decisions differ greatly from one market to another.
Developed jurisdictions such as Australia, Hong Kong, Japan and Singapore all have well defined and strictly governed real estate markets, often competing to attract investment from institutional investors with an Asian property mandate. The other end of the spectrum sees frontier markets such as Vietnam, China and India closely studying regulatory frameworks in the rest of the region as a guide to establish their own viable marketplace for international real estate investors.

Many would–be software entrepreneurs with expertise in many fields attempt to turn a homegrown application—one developed for use in their own business or profession—into a commercial product. Lack of knowledge, experience, or skills often prevents the idea from ever taking shape, let alone achieving its potential. Entering a new field to start a business leaves many developers unprepared and not even fully aware it’s something they know so little about. They will also often have a job that conflicts with the time commitment required to market the program well enough for it to become a complete success.

Sustainable Value: How the World's Leading Companies Are Doing Well by Doing Good
Stanford University Press |2008|ISBN 978-0-8047-5963-2 | English | 28 pages | PDF | 1.2 MB
Sustainable Value is divided into three parts. Part I is a management fable about Deena, a young CEO, and the challenges she faces to profitably address her company’s impacts on society and the environment. Her story is one of personal empowerment, of finding balance and connection to what is important in life. It’s also a tale of corporate profit and growth.
What makes Deena’s story unique is that her eventual success—personal, financial, and corporate—is the result of “doing good.” She is a talented but ordinary human being who demonstrates leadership in a time of heightened global problems ranging from poverty to the energy crisis and climate change.

Corporate social responsibility, sustainability, and citizenship are terms that often evoke considerable skepticism and cynicism, particularly in civil society. Much needed sector-specific and comparative research, which could facilitate a more fact-oriented debate, is still missing from the literature. The present study aims to fill this gap by presenting data collected from two groups of managers, namely sustainability experts and non-sustainability experts, from two different industry sectors (integrated oil and gas vs. electric utilities) and several geographical regions. Designed to form the basis of an undergraduate course in mathematical finance, this book builds on mathematical models of bond and stock prices and covers three major areas of mathematical finance that all have an enormous impact on the way modern financial markets operate, namely: Black-Scholes' arbitrage pricing of options and other derivative securities; Markowitz portfolio optimization theory and the Capital Asset Pricing Model; and interest rates and their term structure. Assuming only a basic knowledge of probability and calculus, it covers the material in a mathematically rigorous and complete way at a level accessible to second or third year undergraduate students. The text is interspersed with a multitude of worked examples and exercises, so it is ideal for self-study and suitable not only for students of mathematics, but also students of business management, finance and economics, and anyone with an interest in finance who needs to understand the underlying theory. Throughout banking, mathematical techniques are used. Some of these are within software products or models; mathematicians use others to analyse data. The current literature on the subject is either very basic or very advanced.
The Mathematics of Banking offers an intermediate guide to the various techniques used in the industry, and a consideration of how each one should be approached. Written in a practical style, it will enable readers to quickly appreciate the purpose of the techniques and, through illustrations, see how they can be applied in practice. Coverage is extensive and includes techniques such as VaR analysis, Monte Carlo simulation, extreme value theory, variance and many others.
A practical review of mathematical techniques needed in banking which does not expect a high level of mathematical competence from the reader Read more...

Real Options Theory (Advances in Strategic Management)
Publisher:JAI Press | Pages:520 | 2007-08-13 | ISBN: 0762314273 | PDF | 2 MB
Product Description:
Real options theory has attracted significant interest in the field of strategic management. Advocates of the approach emphasize that importing concepts from financial economics holds out the potential of yielding new insights on strategic decision-making under uncertainty as well as boundary-of-the-firm issues that are the focus of competitive and corporate strategy. While considerable progress has been made in conceptualizing different types of real options for various strategic investments, considerably less has been done to empirically validate the core propositions of real options theory. As a result there is much debate about the merits and promise of real options in strategy.

First to market with a book on solid investment strategies aimed at protecting current investments in a slow-growth economy and falling stock market. Author is an investment expert and skilled writer. He specializes in clear strategies for beginning and intermediate investors.
In 2000, estimates ranged from 8-14% of households were using online investment services. The more than 9 million households (8%) made up 15% of all households with investments.
For years, it was hard not to make money in the stock market—then suddenly, investors began asking "Now what do I do?" With high-tech stocks fizzling and utilities and blue chips falling to embarrassing lows, investors watched retirement dreams change as accounts reversed double-digit growth rates. The choices facing investors are no longer clear cut. Convert everything to cash? Mutual funds? Value stocks? Real estate? Bonds? Add the voices of the daily business news which sound like the end of the world is near and it's no wonder investors are confused. Your goal in a bear market is to hold your own and position yourself to take advantage of an emerging bull market.

Nafziger explains the reasons for the fast growth of Pacific Rim countries, Brazil, Poland, and (recently) India, and the increasing economic misery and degradation of large parts of sub-Saharan Africa. He also examines China and other post-socialist economies as low- and middle-income countries, without, however, overshadowing a primary focus on the third world. Nafziger's text is filled with real-world examples--emphasizing the themes of poverty, inequality, unemployment, the environment, and deficiencies of people in less developed countries.

Investment Fables: Exposing the Myths of "Can't Miss" Investment Strategies

Investment Fables
FT Press | 2004-03-22 | ISBN: 0131403125 | 539 pages | PDF | 4,3 MB
The main message is that there are no easy profits in the stock market. There's no profit without risk, and that means you can lose your money just as easily as make money. He starts each chapter with a "fable," a story of some gullible investor who follows one of the conventional strategies for stock profits (for example, buy low p/e stocks) and, after losing money, finds out it's not that simple. Rather than simply debunking all the traditional stock market investing strategies, he explores how much, if any, truth there is each one, and how you would need to practice that strategy in order to make money. For example, instead of simply screening for low p/e stocks, you would need to add other criteria in order to avoid the real losers.

AMACOM | 2002-05-15 | ISBN: 0814471226 | 288 pages | PDF | 1,3 MB
Outside of the accounting and finance departments, not many business people are interested in the finer points of financial reports. But every manager must have a thorough understanding of what their finance and accounting staffs do, why they do it, and what these reports really mean. Edward Fields' Essentials Of Finance And Accounting For Nonfinancial Managers tells how to understand the basics of a balance sheet, income statement, cash flow statement and annual reports. Newcomers to reading company financials will appreciate the clear explanations on investment returns, analysis ratios, and other methods of understanding business reports.
This indispensable book demystifies the role that accounting and finance play in a corporation and demonstrates how financial decisions are manifestations of company goals. The author's crystal-clear examples show how managers can connect corporate financial information directly to their own strategies and actions. To demonstrate these connections, the author covers such essential topics as:
* Balance sheets and income/cash flow statements * Reading and understanding annual reports * Fixed-cost and variable-cost issues * Financial analysis, budgeting and forecasting.

Riding the Rising Ride: A 21st Century Strategy for U.S. Competitiveness and Prosperity
ASTRA | December 2007 | ISBN 9780865715424 | English | 76 pages | PDF | 3.8 MB
The United States confronts a global competitive landscape that has radically transformed in the past decade. Fueled by global deployment of advanced telecommunications, trade liberalization, and economic reforms in many countries, globalization and integration of the world’s national economies have accelerated, and emerging economies represent a growing share of global business commerce. While these changes spread increased growth and economic opportunity around the world, the competitive arena is more crowed than ever before.
The United States must now compete against many other nations to attract and retain the R&D investment and business activities that drive our economy, and an increasing number of Americans at all skill levels find themselves in direct competition with foreign workers. High wage advanced economies will find it more difficult to compete in the global marketplace to perform many routine tasks, routine manufacturing and routine service delivery. In this environment, U.S. competitiveness will depend on our ability to develop and deliver “first to the world” products and services. Ensuring America remains the world’s leader in science, technology and innovation will be key to meeting this challenge.
This report examines the powerful forces driving this global economic transformation, and outlines an action agenda for policy makers to begin making the dramatic changes in support for innovation that will be necessary to ensure U.S. leadership in innovation in the 21st century.

Money Matters: The American Experience With Money
Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago | 2001 | English | ISBN 1930748035 | 18 pages | PDF | 1.4 MB
The Beginnings... and Beyond
From the earliest times when commodities such as tobacco and beaver pelts were used as money, to the present when credit and debit cards are commonplace, money has always played a central role in the American experience.
Early in our history, our monetary system consisted of numerous foreign coins and paper currencies issued by the thirteen colonies and the Continental Congress. More than two hundred years later, we now have a single national currency and privately owned banks chartered by state and federal governments. Furthermore, a central bank, the Federal Reserve, has replaced gold as the regulator of the value of our money.

Double Standard presents a historical and comparative examination of comprehensive Western European versus minimalist American welfare states. | Theories of Chemistry reviews the theories that underpin chemistry, but yet are not traditionally recognized as such, being normally considered as part of physics. Based on the argument that the needs of chemistry are distinctive, a mathematical structure of topics such as quantum mechanics, relativity theory, thermodynamics and statistical mechanics, suiting the needs of chemistry, is outlined. The subject matter is arranged in a sequence that reveals the foundations of chemistry. Starting from the mathematical basis, the sequence runs through the general concepts (mechanics and wave formalism) and the elementary building blocks, to molecules and macrosystems.
The book is the product of the author’s reading of original literature rather than of standard texts. It differs from what is conventionally emphasized because of the different approach that it argues for the recognition of chemistry as an emergent discipline, ultimately based on the properties and structure of space and time. Hence the emphasis on otherwise unexpected topics such as quaternions, lie groups, polarized light, compressed atoms, rydberg atoms, solitons, molecular hydrogen, and phase transitions, amongst others. The topic is the understanding of chemistry from first principles. |

Clear, concise, and practical, The Trading Game shows you how to harness the power of money management for any trading method “The goal of most futures traders is to make a million dollars as fast and as painlessly as possible. Unfortunately, few traders achieve this goal. In The Trading Game, Ryan Jones demonstrates how the proper application of his new money management strategy, Fixed Ratio Trading, can enable an average trading system to earn spectacular profits. My advice? Don’t trade until you’ve spent as much time and effort on money management as you’ve spent on developing your entry and exit rules.”
